Senior Financial Advisor

Joseph H. ("Jay") Bragdon

Senior Financial Advisor

Jay Bragdon is a Senior Financial Advisor at Montis Financial. Jay's primary responsibilities include relationship, investment, and portfolio management for Montis' clients families.

Jay has served as investment advisor to high net worth families for more than 40 years. As a pioneer in the field of corporate sustainability, he co-chaired the first national symposium on ethics and investment at the Harvard Business School in 1972, and has worked continuously ever since to expand that field.

Understanding the limitations of traditional (linear) investment analysis, which subordinates the well-being of people and Nature to the pursuit of GDP and profit, Jay maintains that such “living assets” are the primary source of economic value creation; and that nurturing these assets, instead of being an unnecessary expense, enables companies to regenerate from within. To test the legitimacy of this unconventional (non-linear) approach, he created in 1995 a learning lab of corporate leaders in living asset stewardship called the Global Living Asset Management Performance (LAMP) Index.

The extraordinary performance of companies in this Index eventually led to the publication of three books: Profit For Life (2006), Companies That Mimic Life (2016) and Economies That Mimic Life (2021). Considered together, all three books frame an emerging renaissance in corporate and political-economic leadership.

With a BA from American University’s School of International Service and an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Jay understands the value of public service, environmental stewardship and financial stability in both areas; and the beneficial feedbacks these policies generate for people, planet and profit.

Jay has served on the board of the’ Sustainability Institute, which was founded by Donella Meadows and has been a research member of the Society for Organizational, which emerged in 1997 from MIT’s Center for Organizational Learning.  He is presently a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science.

Jay and his wife Jeanne live in Woodstock, VT where they pursue their interests in gardening, wildlife habitat and the growth of their 7 grandchildren. Before moving to Vermont, Jay’s love of river systems extended to the sport of rowing, where he competed throughout Europe and North America.
